For qualified foundation peers starting to carry organisational responsibility

Peer Facilitation Trainee Initiative

"Learning to experiment with responsibility for self & others - sideways, downwards and upwards"

Building your insight, capacity and understanding for managing projects, teams, work units, tasks forces and learning groups – further developing you as a skilled and accredited facilitator.

Who’s it for

Alumni of Our Future Leaders programme (OFL) wanting to understand the art of facilitation. Ready to connect and work together by sharing, learning and developing at a deeper level of awareness.

Our aim

Deepening your understanding of groups as psycho-social systems alongside your developmental relationships with individuals. Supporting you in gaining a richer understanding and better ‘feel’ of teams and groups for you to work on when taking responsibility in role.

We tackle

Exploring your strengths and weaknesses, by working with what is happening in the moment and noticing how you relate to it. Handling the unpredictability in other people’s responses, the uncertainty in the way change happens and the art of influencing and shaping as controls are shifting.

How we work with you

As well as learning through the modules set out below, you’ll meet and work with others with whom you can bond as a learning group, helping with live Recess College programmes and transferring these skills to your professional and organisational life.

Modules

The two-year Peer Facilitation Foundation Training comprises the below components.

Stage 1

Training days

Exploring facilitation by:

  • Investigating the design and significance of OFL and recalling and debriefing on your experience of it,
  • Remembering the experience of being facilitated, exploring that experience, and starting to understand the role of facilitator,
  • Developing the peer learning group and doing further personal work,
  • Preparing for and getting a feel on how to lead a Personal Action Learning group (PAL),
  • Building an understanding of how to help the development of others,
  • Developing a knowledge on how to own your own reactions,
  • Reviewing experiences of leading PAL groups.

Stage 2

Practice grounds

You will be given opportunities for:

  • Facilitating PAL groups on OFL alumni days – under supervision,
  • Leading discussion groups during seminars,
  • Traineeship: participating as a supervised member of staff at an OFL programme

Stage 3

Monthly conference calls

Sharing interactions amongst the peers of experiences during the interim period between training days – presenting your own work situations, and the group works with the described situations:

  • Deepening the shared understanding of group dynamics through discussing your own work organisations,
  • Exploring decision making in teams at work; the culture and practices of the organisation and how this moulds the behaviours that are or are not effective,
  • Observing power structures, group dynamics and the elements that lead to change at work,
  • Noticing emotional data as information and your personal feelings as an indicator of your work environment, and how they alert you to what is ‘off’,
  • Discussing ways of how to increase teamwork in your own group at work, and in your own peer group, as it happens.

Stage 4

Evaluation and accreditation

Documenting your progress as you go, at the end you’ll be asked to describe your learnings and areas of development relating to you in the role of peer facilitator, your personal development during throughout and the application of peer group facilitation technology during the training and at work.

The staff and your fellow peers will comment on your self-evaluation and you will submit this peer reviewed self-assessment, your personal history and a biography to the Association of Facilitators to become accredited as a Recess College Peer Foundation Facilitator.
